BACKGROUND

QUALIFICATIONS and BIO

 

Dr. Stephanie Schacher is clinical psychologist licensed in New York and Connecticut.   She is a highly skilled clinician with over 10 years of experience in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of mental illness.  She specializes in the treatment of adults, adolescents, and couples, with a special interest in trauma and infertility. 

 

Dr. Schacher has done disaster relief training and treatment for victims of 9/11, and hurricanes Katrina and Rita in the Gulf Coast in 2005.  She has published and presented at workshops, conferences, university medical centers, and foster care agencies on topics such as recovery from trauma, treatment modalities for PTSD, recognizing and working with trauma reactions in children, vicarious traumatization and compassion fatigue, and self-care for providers involved in disaster relief work. 

 

While in practice in Manhattan, Dr. Schacher was on faculty in the department of  Psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and held an appointment at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center.   

 

In 2007, Dr. Schacher relocated to Connecticut and is now in private practice on the shoreline.  Dr. Schacher collaborates with primary care physicians and psychiatrists if medication is indicated.  She has clinical privileges at the Hospital of Saint Raphael, and provides services to their Center for Obesity Surgery.  She is also an adjunct faculty clinical supervisor at Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology, Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

 

PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATIONS 

 

Dr. Schacher is a member of the New York State Psychological Association and the Connecticut Society for Psychoanalytic Psychology.  She is also a member of the Disaster Response Network of the Mental Health Association of NYC, the Medical Reserve Corps of the New York City Dept. of Health and Mental Hygiene, APA’s Disaster Response Network, and OTZMA Emergency Medical Volunteers for Israel.

 

CLINICAL TRAINING 

 

Dr. Schacher received her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology, Albert Einstein Medical Center.  She received her Masters in Organizational Psychology at Teachers College, Columbia University

 

AWARDS AND PRESENTATIONS 

 

In 2001, Dr. Schacher received the Malyon-Smith Scholarship Award for outstanding contribution to the research in the filed of psychology of gay, lesbian, and bisexual issues for her research on gay fatherhood.  In 2001, she presented her research at the annual APA convention in San Francisco.  She works with gay and lesbian parenting and relationship issues, as well as sexual orientation issues, in her clinical practice. 

 

In 2006, Dr. Schacher presented her work on trauma and disaster relief at the annual APA conference in New Orleans.  She has lectured and presented workshops on trauma reactions to disaster, resiliency, and recovery.
